director's statement
The idea for Welcome to Snugville first came about during a period of time when I used “sleepcasts” on the meditation app Headspace to relax my mind every night. In these audio stories, a grounded and soothing narrator would guide me through a peaceful location such as a moonlit library, empty beach, or cozy small town. Nothing noteworthy would ever happen in these stories, but I asked myself what if they did. I started to think about my relationship to this narrator and the power they had over my relaxed mind. These thoughts, mixed with personal experiences with men during my early 20’s, formed the initial inspiration for Welcome to Snugville. I hope the film leads audience members to be immersed in the world of Snugville as they identify with Corey’s connection to it, her fear of change, and loss of innocence. I’m also investigating what it means to be someone who’s looked at versus the avid looker, and how the one who’s looked at might start to rely on this regular occurrence as their sense of purpose.
